Discover the Hydrostone: Halifax’s Historic Gem

Nestled on the Halifax peninsula, the Hydrostone neighborhood seamlessly weaves its rich historical roots with sleek, contemporary developments, creating a harmonious blend that has made it one of the most sought-after areas in the city. Join us for a tour of this vibrant community!

A Glimpse into History

The Hydrostone, located on the north end of the Halifax peninsula, is reminiscent of an English village. This unique architectural style was intentionally chosen after the Halifax Explosion devastated the area. The Hydrostone consists of ten short, parallel streets bordered by Duffus Street to the north, Young Street to the south, Isleville Street to the west, and Novalea Drive to the east. The neighborhood draws its name from the special cinderblocks from which the houses were constructed. After the fires caused by the explosion in wood-framed homes, planners decided it would be safer to build with block.

A Modern Village with Rich Amenities

One of the highlights of the Hydrostone is the quaint Hydrostone Market area, featuring specialty shops and restaurants along a tree-lined boulevard. This charming market adds to the neighborhood’s appeal and offers residents a place to shop, dine, and socialize. In 2011, the Canadian Institute of Planners named the Hydrostone the Second Greatest Neighborhood in its inaugural Great Places in Canada contest.

Living in the Hydrostone

Most of the original dwellings are row-houses in groups of four and six, except for the large, two-story single-family houses. In recent years, the area has become highly sought after by young professionals and small families due to its ample green space and proximity to shops and transit. This newer generation has been buying and renovating the charming older homes as they become available, often due to long-time owners moving to senior care facilities or passing away. Developers have also embraced the new vibe of the area, adding condos and luxury apartments to the mix.

Community and Lifestyle

The Hydrostone offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern convenience, making it a perfect place to call home. With its rich history, vibrant market, and close-knit community, it’s no wonder this neighborhood is so highly regarded.
