Custom Kitchens Explained: Materials, Trends, and Features That Matter

What Buyers Really Notice About Your Kitchen: Trends, Materials, and Renovations That Add Value

If there’s one room that has the power to influence a buyer’s first impression of a home, it’s the kitchen.

It’s where families gather after a long day, where friends naturally gravitate during every get-together, and here in Nova Scotia, it’s often where our famous kitchen parties begin.

As a REALTOR®, I’ve seen it time and time again. Buyers can overlook dated paint colours or older flooring, but the kitchen often becomes the deciding factor in how they feel about a home. In fact, I recently purchased a home myself—and the kitchen was what sold me.

That’s why I was excited to welcome Tonya Squires of MCK Kitchens to Episode 7 of Real Estate with Brenda K. We talked about everything from today’s biggest kitchen trends to cabinet materials, local manufacturing, renovations, hidden storage solutions, and how homeowners can design a kitchen they’ll love for years to come.

Why the Kitchen Matters So Much

The kitchen has evolved far beyond being a place to prepare meals.

Today, it’s the heart of the home.

It’s where homework gets done, conversations happen, holiday meals are prepared, and memories are made. Buyers aren’t simply evaluating cabinets and countertops—they’re imagining how they’ll live in the space.

That’s why kitchens often have such a significant impact on a home’s perceived value.

Whether you’re renovating to enjoy your home for years to come or preparing to sell in the future, investing in a thoughtful kitchen design is one of the smartest improvements you can make.

Today’s Kitchen Design Trends

One of the biggest surprises during our conversation was how kitchen styles continue to evolve.

After years of solid white kitchens dominating design magazines, homeowners are embracing warmer, more personalized spaces.

Tonya explained that natural wood is making a strong comeback, often paired with painted cabinetry in soft greens, creams, or warm neutrals. Two-tone kitchens continue to be incredibly popular, with darker lower cabinets balanced by lighter uppers to create depth and character.

The result is a kitchen that feels warm, inviting, and uniquely personal rather than overly uniform.

Understanding Cabinet Materials

One topic homeowners don’t always think about is what’s actually behind the cabinet door.

Many people assume “wood is wood,” but today’s kitchens are built using several different materials, each with its own advantages.

Natural wood remains a beautiful choice, offering unique grain patterns that make every kitchen one of a kind. Birch has become especially popular for homeowners who want a softer, more subtle grain than traditional oak.

For those looking for greater consistency, modern melamine products have come a long way. Designed to replicate the appearance of wood, they provide excellent durability while minimizing the natural variation found in solid wood.

We also discussed painted cabinetry, which has become one of today’s most requested finishes. Rather than painting solid wood doors, MCK manufactures one-piece MDF doors specifically for painted applications. This helps reduce the movement that naturally occurs as humidity changes throughout Nova Scotia’s seasons, providing a smoother, longer-lasting finish.

Choosing the Right Finish

Colour isn’t the only decision homeowners face.

Finish plays an important role in both appearance and everyday maintenance.

While high-gloss cabinets can certainly create a striking contemporary look, Tonya explained why satin finishes continue to be the preferred choice for many homeowners. Satin offers a softer appearance while doing a much better job of hiding fingerprints, scratches, and everyday wear.

For busy families, durability often becomes just as important as aesthetics.

Local Manufacturing Makes a Difference

One aspect of MCK Kitchens that really stood out to me is that every kitchen is manufactured right here in Burnside.

Many homeowners don’t realize that when purchasing cabinetry, it can sometimes be difficult to know where it was built or whether replacement parts will be available years later.

Because MCK manufactures locally, homeowners have the confidence of knowing replacement doors, matching finishes, or future additions can often be recreated if needed.

That local craftsmanship has helped MCK serve Nova Scotians since 1989, and it’s something that continues to set them apart today.

It’s What’s Inside the Cabinets That Counts

One of my favourite parts of visiting MCK’s showroom is seeing just how much kitchen functionality has evolved.

Today’s kitchens aren’t simply about beautiful cabinets—they’re designed around how families actually live.

Hidden garbage pull-outs, custom corner storage, appliance garages, integrated coffee stations, specialty drawer organizers, pet feeding stations, and touch-open cabinets all help create a cleaner, more organized space.

These aren’t just luxury features. They’re practical solutions that make everyday life easier while maximizing every inch of available storage.

Renovating Your Kitchen Doesn’t Have to Be Overwhelming

Many homeowners assume a kitchen renovation has to begin with a complete demolition.

In reality, every renovation starts with a conversation.

Whether you’re building a new home or updating an existing one, professional designers can help you visualize the finished space long before construction begins.

One feature I especially like at MCK is their ability to create personalized mood boards, allowing homeowners to see cabinet colours, countertops, backsplash selections, flooring, and finishes together before making final decisions.

That kind of planning helps homeowners feel confident they’re creating a space they’ll love.

A Kitchen Can Be One of the Best Investments You Make

As a REALTOR®, I often tell my clients that if they’re going to invest in one room of their home, the kitchen is usually at the top of the list.

It’s one of the first spaces buyers notice, one of the most heavily used rooms in the home, and often one of the renovations that provides the greatest overall enjoyment for the people living there.

Of course, every renovation should first be about creating a home that works for your family. Added resale value is simply an added bonus.

The Biggest Takeaway

If there was one message that stood out throughout our conversation, it was this:

Design your kitchen for the way you live.

Trends will continue to evolve, but a well-designed kitchen should balance beauty, functionality, quality materials, and thoughtful storage that works for your everyday life.

Whether you’re building from scratch, renovating an older kitchen, or simply gathering ideas for the future, taking the time to understand your options will help you create a space you’ll enjoy for years to come.
